Pedestrian killed in crash

A pedestrian was killed after being struck by an SUV in the 13200 block of Hull Street Road on March 3.

According to county police, Edward Rivas III, 49, of the 13600 block of Quail Hollow Lane, was struck by a Ford Escape in the eastbound lanes of Hull Street Road at about 1:30 a.m. Rivas was transported to a local medical facility, where he died from his injuries. No charges have been filed against the driver, who remained at the scene of the accident.

Identity of man in fire and shooting incident released

County police have released the identity of an Ettrick man who is suspected to have set his home on fire before suffering a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound on Feb. 22.

James W. Smith Jr., 44, of the 3400 block of North Street, has been identified as the deceased. Police had been dispatched that morning to check on Smith’s welfare after receiving a report that Smith was suicidal. Upon arriving, police saw a man walk around the back of the house. Moments later, the house caught fire, and officers heard what sounded like a gunshot.

After county fire and EMS crews responded and got the fire under control, Smith’s body was found behind the house. The investigation is ongoing.

One dies in residential fire

One person was killed last week in a residential fire that took place in the 300 block of Glenpark Lane.

County Fire and EMS responded at 12:57 a.m. on March 1 to a report of a house fire. It took fire crews approximately 45 minutes to get the fire under control. The house suffered significant damage.

Once the fire had been extinguished, crews entered the home and found its lone occupant deceased on the first floor. The name of the deceased is being withheld until the medical examiner can make a positive identification.

Boy killed by falling tree

A Chester boy was killed on March 2 after a falling tree struck a residence in the 800 block of Cliffside Drive while he was sleeping inside.

County police responded to the residence at about 2 a.m. Anthony Hamilton, 6, was pulled from the residence and transported to an area hospital, where he died as a result of his injuries.
