Driver killed in two-vehicle crash

County police are investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash that occurred Feb. 7 in the 12900 block of Spring Run Road.

At approximately 3 p.m., police say the driver of a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe was entering the roadway from a driveway when he was struck by a 2006 Ford Focus traveling south on Spring Run Road. The driver of the Chevrolet, Charles Bowers, 75, of the 12900 block of Spring Run Road, was transported to St. Francis Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the Focus was not injured, and remained at the scene.

At this point, it does not appear that speed or alcohol are factors in the crash.

Police seek bank robbery suspect

County police are searching for a suspect who robbed the Bank of Southside Virginia branch at 4310 West Hundred Road on Feb. 9.

Police say that at about 4:30 p.m., a suspect approached a teller at the bank and passed a note demanding money. The suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of cash. No weapon was displayed during the incident.

The suspect is described as a black female, about 5 feet 5 inches tall, with a medium build and black shoulder-length hair. The suspect was wearing a black jacket and a black ballcap.

Shopping center proposed for Chester

A new, 300,000-square-foot shopping center has been proposed in Chester near the intersection of Jefferson Davis Highway and state Route 10.

Marketing materials from Thalhimer Realty Partners Inc. show a development with two major anchor stores and multiple junior anchors.

David Smith, a senior vice president with Cushman & Wakefield Thalhimer, says the project, named Chester Marketplace, has already generated interest from national retailers.

“There’s a lot of work to be done to get this deal to fly,” Smith says. “We’re just putting this deal together.”

Following preleasing, a zoning amendment, site plan and construction permits will have to be approved by the county. Construction is expected to begin in the second half of 2019, with occupancy targeted to begin in the second quarter of 2020.
