Professional football coming to Chesterfield

The Richmond Revolution, named the 2010 Indoor Football League Franchise of the Year, will play its home games for the 2011 season at SportsQuest on Genito Road.

The facility’s indoor football arena is currently under construction, but won’t be finished in time for the upcoming season, so this year’s home games will be played outdoors on SportsQuest’s East Campus. The Revolution played at the Arthur Ashe Center in Richmond last year.

“We’ve built a beautiful synthetic turf field complex in Chesterfield County,” said Steve Burton, SportsQuest chairman and CEO, “and our Revolution fans and sponsors wanted us to play there. We therefore made the unique request to the IFL board for permission to play indoor football outdoors for a season, and they graciously granted our request. They recognized it would be a lot of fun for our fans.”

The first home game is scheduled for March 5.

“In December we broke ground on a 250,000-square-foot sport, aquatics and fitness center that will be home to the Revolution in 2012,” said SportsQuest president and Revolution general manager Phil Evans. “We needed a place to play in 2011, however, and we wanted to be on campus to accommodate our fan and sponsorship base. Playing outdoors – the way the game of football was played originally – was the logical solution.”
